Butterfly Symbolism

We have used a butterfly as a sign of comfort, as there is deep symbolism behind its short and interesting life.

A butterfly starts its life journey as a caterpillar and emerges after a drastic change as a butterfly. To make the transformation the caterpillar makes a cocoon and then emerges as one of nature's most beautiful creatures.  

This alteration of the butterfly's form prompted many ancient cultures to regard the butterfly as a symbol of the impermanence and instability of life on earth.

This astonishing process of change from a caterpillar to a butterfly made many ancient cultures believe that this was similar to the process of a soul's journey from a departed body to heaven.

This butterfly symbolism is illustrated in the ancient Greek art symbolisation, which often showed the human soul with butterfly wings intact.
